Symmetry is as important with gum tissue as it is with teeth. Through the use of laser technology, we have the capability to modify and resculpt the surrounding gum tissue. The aesthetic difference of laser recontouring is the difference in a good looking smile enhancement and a great smile enhancement.
Gum contouring, also known as gingival contouring, is tissue modification which improves the appearance of your smile by correcting uneven gum lines, removing excess gum tissue, and/or fixing receding gums. Many people don’t realize how essential a consistent and even gum line is to a perfect smile. This is why we will often perform this procedure, when necessary, with other restorative procedures to provide our patients with their optimal smile.
Types of Gum Problems:
Correcting “Gummy” Smiles: Sometimes smiles can be called “gummy.” This is when the teeth appear small and not all the way protruding from the gum line. The gums can be naturally large, or sometimes medications or conditions such as gum disease can cause the gums to swell, giving this appearance. In this situation, gum contouring will remove excess gum tissue.
Adding More Gum: On the flip side, some patients have receding gums. Receding gums cause not only an unpleasant smile, but also bad implications for teeth. When gums recede, roots of the tooth may be exposed, inviting bacteria and infection. For receding gum lines, contouring helps to add or redistribute gum tissue to better support the teeth.
Did you know? Correcting gum tissue won’t just make your smile better, it will actually improve your mouth health! By filling in any gaps in receding gums, teeth are easier to keep clean and healthy, preventing tooth decay!
The treatment can be performed in the office during any restorative procedure. Using a laser, we’re able to craft a perfect gum line with exact precision and minimal discomfort. Laser procedures also heal more predictably and much faster than the traditional scalpel method.
