Gum disease (periodontitis) is known in dentistry as the “silent killer of teeth”. Nearly 3 out of 4 adults in the continental United States suffer from periodontal disease, without any knowledge of the destruction.
Often referred to as “silent” because there is seldom any pain or discomfort, this disease can rapidly destroy bone and gum tissue, leading eventually to tooth loss. Dental health isn’t the only health implication, however. Recently, more studies have been released that link gum disease to health problems such as cardiovascular (heart) disease, rheumatoid arthritis, respiratory disease, and even blood sugar problems.
Symptoms of gum disease include red and irritated gums, gums that are receding and bleed easily, and blood tainted toothbrush when brushing. Another common symptom is spitting out a bit of blood when flossing your teeth. These signs are the most common initial symptoms of gum disease.
Preventing gum disease from occurring is a top priority of Bynum Aesthetic Dentistry. Through routine dental hygienist cleanings and creating a strong dental routine (that involves daily flossing and twice daily brushings), patients can successfully prevent gum disease from happening.
Proper diagnosis and treatment is critical to stop the bacteria from causing further damage when suffering from gum disease. Early to moderate stages of periodontal disease can be stopped and controlled with effective periodontal therapy. In our practice, we utilize microsonic antimicrobial periodontal therapy to stop bacteria destruction. This therapy eliminates diseased tissue and bacteria present in the gum pocket. Then, through disinfecting the diseased gum pocket and repeating the periodontal therapy, the gums are able to start healing.
